Healthcare & Medicine Subcommittee

The purpose of this subcommittee is to develop initiatives and projects in the field of healthcare and medicine of mutual benefit to Chicago and its two China Sister Cities, Shenyang and Shanghai. The subcommittee addresses common concerns in public health, supports development and training of health professionals, and promotes collaboration in pharmaceutical, surgical and clinical research through periodic exchanges, workshops, and conferences of healthcare professionals, officials and practitioners.

Activities, Events & Initiatives

In September, the Healthcare & Medicine Subcommittee participated in an Interactive Video Conference at UIC entitled, "HIV Prevention among Men who have Sex with Men." Presenters were experts in AIDS prevention and care from both Shenyang and Chicago. The Subcommittee, the UIC Research Director, Dr. Judith Levy and Shenyang CDC intend to organize a "Best Practices Conference" within a year. The goal is to exchange information, research findings, proven methods, and opportunities for skill building around a topic of mutual interest. The Conference speakers will be selected from field experts from both Shenyang and Chicago. It will serve as a "next step" in promoting an ongoing and larger partnership between the cities to help ensure better community health.

Past accomplishments of the subcommittee have included the following:

  •  In October 2007, the subcommittee helped organize activities in Chicago for a visit by a delegation from the Chinese Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety, which is being sponsored by Abbott Laboratories.
  • In cooperation with the UIC College of Nursing and School of Public Health, and the International Visitors Center of Chicago, organized an intensive two-day program for a visiting delegation from the Shenyang Center for Disease Control on August 6-7, 2007.
  • Chicago delegation of health professionals and public health experts visit to Shanghai and Shenyang (2004);
  • Chicago delegation of top pediatricians and hospital administrators visit to Shanghai and Beijing (2001).

For 2007 and 2008, the subcommittee has established the following goals:

  • Compile a comprehensive list of China programs and activities conducted by Chicago-based healthcare organizations and companies;
  • Support current programs and exchanges between Chicago and Chinese medical and healthcare institutions, especially programs and exchanges with Shenyang and Shanghai;
  • Organize a meeting in Chicago on China opportunities for Chicagoland medical and healthcare institutions and companies and a meeting in Shanghai or Shenyang on Chicago opportunities for Chinese medical and healthcare institutions and companies;
  • Develop a symposium or workshop on healthcare to be part of the 2009 China in Chicago Program.
