Arts & Culture Subcomittee
The purpose of this subcommittee is to develop projects (e.g., exhibitions, musical and theatrical performances, film productions and festivals, literature events) that showcase artists and cultural trends in Shanghai, Shenyang and Chicago.

Activities, Events & Initiatives
The Arts and Culture subcommittee is currently in partnership with the Center for Asian Arts and Media of Columbia College in their two-year project, Global Orientalism, with planned contributions to educational or exhibit programs. In September the subcommittee worked with author and China Committee member Jennifer Kwong in presenting her new book Mulberry Child. We are also working with Sister Cities staffer Lisa Xia in developing a 2009 fashion show focused on Shanghai.

The Arts & Culture Subcommittee played an important role in the success of the Silk Road Project in 2006-2007.
The subcommittee is currently working with the Center for Asian Arts and Media at Columbia College Chicago on a pair of related projects:
The Big Read Literacy Project, focusing on Amy Tan’s book The Joy Luck Club.
The Woman Warrior Festival and Awards program, to feature Janet Yang, executive producer of the critically acclaimed film based on the book.
Columbia College Center for Asian Arts & Media A multidisciplinary arts center dedicated to supporting, promoting and presenting arts and media programs by and about Asians and Asian Americans, located in Chicago.
Silk Road Chicago A yearlong, citywide celebration inspired by the art and culture, both ancient and contemporary, of the regions of the historic Silk Road.
Shanghai Cultural Facilities Since 1990, Shanghai has sped up construction of cultural facilities, many of which have already been put into operation. Such new facilities include the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Library, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai Book City, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, and Oriental Green Boat juvenile education and recreational center. By the end of 2003, the city had 36 cultural palaces and mass art palaces, 35 public libraries, 45 archive halls and 23 museums.
