Activities, Events & Initiatives
The Architecture & Engineering Subcommittee is pursuing two projects in areas of research and design:
We have successfully obtained a private grant for a joint academic study by UIC/IIT in Chicago and Tongyi University in Shanghai to study the combination of GeoThermal and Fuel Cell Energy Systems that could be used in heating and cooling a planned residential development at the 500+ acre USX site on the South lakefront in Chicago. Preliminary findings include a projected energy savings of 50 percent for the geothermal system, in comparison to energy consumption to a conventional heating and cooling system.
We is also investigating appropriate sites for construction of a traditional Chinese garden. Subcommittee members have identified one potential linear site just south of the Loop. The next step is to provide a garden proposal for review by the developer, China-based cultural organizations, and corporations for financial and in-kind sponsorship.
Previous projects include:
Assistance with visits to Chicago by Shanghai and Shenyang officials related to urban planning, environmental protection, and municipal infrastructure.
Involvement in planning the Chicago Garden constructed at the 2006 Shenyang International Horticultural Fair and Exhibition.
Of Additional Interest Chicago Architecture Foundation The Chicago Architecture Foundation is dedicated to advancing public interest and education in architecture and related design.
