On January 16, 10th District Congressman Mark Kirk spoke to the China Committee about the goals of the U.S.- China Working Group which he co-founded.
He said that he and more than 40 members of the Working Group try to educate other Members of Congress about critical issues facing both countries. They have had regular briefings and meetings with academic, business and political leaders in both the U.S. and China.
Kirk, who is a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee has traveled to China frequently and has introduced legislation which will upgrade the U.S. diplomatic infrastructure in China and increase Chinese language instruction in the U.S.
The Congressman praised Chicago’s Chinese World Language Program and the Confucius Institute and discussed the city’s ongoing efforts to build the Year of China initiative in Chicago in 2009, which he said would not only help brand Chicago in China but also provide more business and trade opportunities for the city. He also stressed the importance of O’Hare as “the gateway to China” from the United States and mentioned that Chicago has more direct flights to China than any other U.S. city.
He noted that Chicago is in a race to become the center of the American market with China and that this goal will be enhanced by inviting Chinese leaders to the business summit and demonstrating to them the importance of China to the people of Chicago. Kirk offered his support for the fundraising efforts of the China Committee to support this important project. « BACK |
